This Fuel Cap Cover comes from the same company (Top Shelf Parts in Australia) that makes the 22B Replica Door Sills. Just like the door sills, I'm very happy with this Fuel Cap Cover. The OEM Cover (Part#: ST4203355010) has been discontinued forever. It was a rare JDM option and if you can find one used, chances are it will be expensive and in rough shape with a grubby decal. This replica cover solves everything... 1) It's available, 2) It is brand new with a new sticker and 3) it is affordable.
Installation is straight forward. I purchased a brand new JDM gas cap (Part# 42031KE000) for around $26 from Amayama. I'm not sure if the USDM cover works or not. I had been using a 3000gt fuel cap on my Subaru for years after leaving my Subaru cap behind at a gas station. Since I needed to buy a new cap anyways, I figured I'd just buy the JDM cap as that is what these were originally designed for. I don't know if there is much difference between the USDM/JDM cap. If anyone knows, please contact me and I'll update this page.
The cover slid on, but I noticed it didn't quite slide on all the way. I could rock it back and forth. I pushed a little harder but no dice. It was easy to spot the problem. When I removed the cover I could see where it was hitting. The metal cover had left some tiny marks in the plastic corners of the JDM cap. The handle portion of the cap flares out on the ends. I took a file and lightly filed the corners. Afterwards it slid on all the way. To secure it, it comes with screw inserts that pinch the OEM cover from the side. I used the screws (with a tiny dab of blue Loctite), but also added some 3M double sided tape to secure it even more.
Overall I am very happy with the cover. My Subaru build has been complete for a while. I've ran out of things to do to it, and I get excited when I see a new product like this. A shiny Fuel Cap Cover is definitely not something everyone needs, but I think once you see it in person you'll want one. It will give you something to admire while you are filling up.
